The dining table lighting
The dining table has long since replaced the living area with TV as the central point in the house or apartment. Modern kitchens are open-plan, flowing airily into the dining area before the relaxing couch adjoins it in the background.
The dining area is given a lot of space and is becoming increasingly important.
We observe this also from this trend: dining tables are getting longer and longer.
This is because the demand for longer and longer luminaires is also increasing as a result. This demand is directly measurable in our close customer contact.
Lighting dining table properly - how to do it?
Many customers send us photos of their dining table because they want to show us the current lighting situation or have questions.
The photo usually shows a long dining table. This table may look like this, for example:
At one place there is a cereal bowl and a coffee cup, which testifies to a quick departure. Next to it is a handbag with a small stack of notes. Across from it rest notebooks and a 3rd grade math book. At the very end of the table are two empty wine glasses from last evening.
The constructed example is exaggerated. But this type of photo shows us that the dining table is a very lively and central point for a family and much more than just a place where food is eaten:
The dining table is a place for conversations and discussions, for socializing with friends, for homework, and yes, also the place for food. So the dining table has an important task and plays a central role in a home with its multifunctional character.
This makes the question of suitable dining table lighting that meets all requirements all the more important. In view of the huge range of ceiling lights and hanging lamps, many customers are almost overwhelmed.

However, the search is much easier if you orientate yourself along the following parameters:
Tip 1: Basic notes on the function
Before you start looking for the right table lighting, make yourself aware in advance what function it should perform:
- The lamp illuminates the dining table, and only the dining table.
- The luminaire shines only downwards and lays a warm carpet of light on the surface of the table.
- The luminaire does not dazzle.
Our beech bush pendant lamp meets all these criteria.
- In the concrete screen the light is enclosed so that it shines only downwards
- Through the milk glazing of the Philips LED spotlight light falls softly and diffusely without hard edges. This type of lighting makes the dining table atmospheric.
- Table and luminaire form a closed unit, so to speak, its own room in the room. This unity becomes strongest with the choice of a multi-flame pendant luminaire with a ceiling track, which covers the scenery like a roof.
Why is lighting above the dining table so important? Lighting plays a very important role when it comes to homely atmosphere in the room - especially if it is a place where a lot of life takes place. The right lighting above the dining table creates a cozy, relaxed ambience.
Tip 2: Which lamp for which dining table size?
For round and square dining tables, a single pendant lamp is ideal.
The longer the dining table, the longer the lamp should be, so that the overall picture remains harmonious and balanced and the table is evenly illuminated and there are no spots in the dark.
At the same time, the number of lights increases accordingly.
Overview by length
For dining tables with individual sizes, we recommend lighting as follows:
- Areas up to 1.0 x 1.0 meters: A single concrete lamp is sufficient
- Areas between 1.0 x 0.6 to 1.4 x 1.2 meters: The 2 lamp is ideal
- Areas between 1.4 x 0.6 to 1.7 x 1.2 meters: The 3 lamp is ideal
- Areas between 1.7 x 0.6 to 2.6 x 1.2 meters: The 4 lamp is ideal
Your own perception may differ from our recommendations.
Much also depends on how open and airy the room is designed and furnished. In some circumstances, a 4-piece concrete lamp may seem too bulky for a dining table lighting (although it fits the table size), because the room is rather small or there are a lot of home accessories in the room.
Predefined distance for multi-flame pendant lamps
If you choose a multi-flame concrete pendant luminaire, the distance between the lights is already predefined. This is always 40 cm for the ceiling rails. We have chosen this distance because so the individual light cones merge into each other and do not form individual points of light.
Determine distances individually
If you hang individual luminaires or use a power track, then you can freely determine the distance. The power track is ideal as a lighting system if you have an extendable dining table, because the lights on the track are movable.
Tip 3: The ideal height of the lamp above the table
As a guide, we always give about 65 cm.
This is the distance between the table surface and the lower edge of the luminaire. Whether it is 5 cm more or less does not matter. The important thing is that the dining table lighting hangs at a comfortable height.
Pleasant means specifically: high enough that it is out of sight and low enough that it does not dazzle and can also illuminate the table evenly. We regularly supply our concrete lamps with a 2 meter long textile cable. As a rule, this is quite sufficient. They are adjustable in height and excess cable can be easily shortened.
Tip 4: Which illuminant - and how bright should it be?
In advance, from an ecological and economic point of view, it is essential to ensure that the illuminant of the dining table lighting is replaceable. Because this is by far not always the case.
With the Buchenbusch hanging lamp you can change the bulb at any time. The package already includes bulbs: the CorePro LEDspot dimmable from Philips, a solid quality product with high luminous efficiency and long life.
The LED emits diffused light and has a warm white tone (2700 Kelvin), which is perfect for dining table lighting as it creates a warm cozy mood.
The dimmer function
The dimmer function is also very important, so that the light can be individually adjusted to any situation. If no wall dimmer is available or you are open-minded for intelligent lighting systems, smart home products can also be used - e.g. Philips Hue, Osram Lightify or Ikea Home.
The bulbs of these series fit the dimensions of the concrete lamp, provided you have a GU10 base. Meanwhile, there are also low-threshold, quite inexpensive entry-level systems, for example, from Philips Hue, which work without a bridge. These have limited functions, but are usually sufficient for normal use.
Conclusion: what makes a good dining table lighting
- Illuminates only the dining table
- Lays a soft carpet of light on the surface of the table
- Illuminants are dimmable
- Warm white light color for a relaxed, cozy atmosphere
- Compatible with Smart Home (Philips Hue, Osram Lightify, Ikea Home etc.)
